In Donald Miller’s newest novel, Scary Close, he writes, “Sometimes the story we’re telling the world isn’t half as endearing as the one that lives inside us.”
I want to sit in that for a good while. I want to think about what I feel I need to be in order to prove myself to other people. What traits do I need to exhibit in order for so and so to believe I am one thing or another.
I love that Miller constantly probes the reader to, “drop the act”. It’s human nature to yearn to impress, to want to improve, to push our excellence on others so that we may feel worthy in their presence.
But how beautiful of an idea is it that the very essence of who we truly are has the capability to shine a greater, broader, deeper light than any light we’ve ever known; Than any light we’ve ever given off?
What if we all believed in the story we are hiding behind?
